ArcGIS Server (ArcSDE) PDF Print E-mail

ArcSDE is server software developed by ESRI and is integrated into both ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server.

From the ESRI website: "ArcSDE technology is a core component of ArcGIS Server. It manages spatial data in a relational database management system (RDBMS) and enables it to be accessed by ArcGIS clients. It is the technology that provides the framework to support long transactions, which facilitates the versioned editing environment in multiuser geodatabases. The geodatabase is the primary data storage model for ArcGIS; it provides a single central location to access and manage spatial data."

With the use of ArcSDE technology and ArcGIS Server, GBK has the ability to:

  • Use, manage, and store all GIS data in one place
  • Scale a geodatabase to fit any of our clients needs
  • Create the geodatabase on any of the following DBMS' (Database Management System)
    • IBM DB2
    • IBM Informix
    • Microsoft SQL Server
    • Oracle
  • Supply our clients with a standalone execution behind a firewall that is scalable depending upon user-admin configuration

Reference Project:

Fort Sill Army Mapper Project

Fort Sill DPW, Fort Sill, OK

GBKs geospatial technology team was tasked with creating an ArcGIS Server web application incorporating basic GIS tools, queries and dynamic data. The purpose of the project was to create an application which allowed Fort Sill’s copious amount of GIS data to be brought together and converted into a usable and cohesive tool. The result was the ‘Army Mapper’ application which allows soldiers, civilian personnel, emergency responders and construction contractors to search, identify and track facilities and infrastructure on the installation. Furthermore, this tool ultimately eliminated the need for the client to pay for costly GIS licenses that are normally needed to operate the basic tools incorporated in the web application.

Some milestones and deliverables included:
  1. Development of ArcGIS server application;
  2. Customized product to clients specifications while retaining all user function;
  3. Searchable by coordinates, feature (building, road, utility, department) or sector;
  4. Developed a ‘print map’ feature enabling users to generate a hardcopy of their query;
  5. Web-based application securely installed behind firewall.
